Earlier books seemed to end very abruptly without subplot resolution, but this book answers many of the former questions and I'm looking forward to book 8. I loved the twists in this plot- not that I saw them all coming- I did figure out the first major twist. The story moves so well, the humor is appropriate and catchy. All in all, a wonderful, must-have tool for serious screenwriters. There weren't clear resolutions necessarily, but more like just a topic that deserves more thought and not to be taken lightly. I wish the Mykel side of the story wouldn't be as predictable as it was if you've read any previous Modesitt - and Dainyl's mid-level officer caution against high level scheming superiors is far too similar to that of his characters in other novels - but since Modesitt sticks to world exploration and combat operations for almost the entire book it still works well. When reading the works of truly exceptional writers, it can be difficult to find the appropriate words to describe their art in a way that would do it any justice. Mathematically, it's really good for undergrad students to review complex analysis.
