Also nicely done, is Modesitt's meditations on who/what has the right to survive in this universe, on how/why they do/do not do so, and also how no form of life that must consume/compete with other forms of life to exist is completely guilt-free when it comes to cost and results of their survival processes. I've only just flipped through it so far, but I can already tell what an awesome book this is. It would have helped me as a junior doctor too.
