While part of a series, The Chatsfield Rebel's Bargain is a stand alone story in its own right. Fan of other series written by Salvatore. I'm intentionally not reading other reviews in order to prevent coloring my own opinion. Read this book and apply the priniciples. It is about a young foundling (Nicodeme/Seraphin) who was raised in a very conservative religious city who is made a vampire against his will. Some of these altered states include dreams, spirituality, stroke and drugs and alcohol. Very bright and colorful. Radike's combat involvement is that as seen (and directed) by a line officer, so there is less direct combat action to be found than in other memoirs on my list but as for sharp, detailed criticism, even ridicule of the army, this is an explosive read. Ember goes into a deep depression for two weeks, climbs out of that then does something stupid yet AGAIN. If you are looking for something for a youngster or to put on a tablet to keep the kids entertained this one is fine.
